

Hemingway struggled with Gellhorn’s long absences on assignments, and she didn’t understand why he hadn’t joined her in Europe to cover the war himself. Martha joined him soon after and they were married in 1940, but storms were already a-brewing… In Spain, Hemingway also covered the war before moving to Cuba in early 1939. Despite Hemingway still being married to his second wife, it wasn’t long before they travelled to Spain together, where Gellhorn was due to report on the Spanish Civil War (she was already making a name for herself as a ground-breaking journalist).
